Abstract
Abstract
Breastfeeding is one of the most natural act and intimate human interaction. Separation of mother and baby after birth creates an interruption in maintaining lactation. The main objective of this study was to identify the effect of back massage on amount of breast milk among mothers of neonates admitted in NICU. An experimental pretest-posttest control group design was adopted. The tools used were baseline proforma, calibrated breastmilk measuring cup and breast milk volume diary. Subjects were selected using consecutive sampling and allocated as 30 in each group. As first step baseline data were collected. Then the amount of expressed breast milk was measured using a calibrated measuring cup two times two hours apart in the control group. Same as in the control group breast milk amount was also measured in the experimental group but they received back massage for 7-10 minutes prior to breast milk expression. The mean and standard deviation of the difference in the amount of breast milk was 1.1667± 4.379 in the control group and 6.4667± 4.493 in the experimental group. There was significant difference in the amount of breast milk between experimental and control group (p=0.000). The study concluded that the back massage was an effective intervention for improving the amount of breast milk . The study also concluded that the breast milk amount had relationship with variables such as number of postnatal day and days of NICU admission. The study finally indicated that back massage was an efficient and cost effective method for improving the breast milk production.
