Abstract

Abstract

Background: The last few decades have shown a tremendous increase in the need for Palliative Care (PC). Although solitary evidence of PC in specialized settings and specific disease conditions is available, the effect of integrating this service in acute care settings is lacking. This study explores the realms of PC in healthcare utilization and the quality of life of patients and caregivers in acute care facilities.

Methods: Randomized Controlled Trials where PC is rendered in acute care facilities will be included. A comprehensive search strategy will be undertaken from selected databases including PubMed- Medline, CINHAL, ProQuest, Scopus, Web of Science, and CENTRAL. Two reviewers would independently perform data extraction and quality appraisal. The methodological quality will be assessed using Cochrane Collaboration’s tool for assessing the risk of bias (RoB – 2). The third reviewer will be sought to resolve disagreements. A metanalysis will be performed subject to the availability of data. The study shall adhere to PRISMA-P guidelines.

Results: The two reviewers independently reviewed the studies for inclusion. Currently, full-text screening is ongoing. We propose to publish the result of the actual review towards the end of the first quarter of 2024.

Conclusion: Knowing the effect of integrating PC in acute care settings is crucial to improving its applicability worldwide. The evidence derived from this systematic review will aid in the care decisions of practitioners, guide policymakers, and act as a precursor for future research in the same field.

Protocol Registration: The study has been PROSPERO registered as (CRD42023479263)
