Abstract
The experience of nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 in the Maldives may have been unique and at the same time similar to the global nursing situation during the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This research aimed to explore nurses’ experiences in providing nursing care for COVID-19 patients in one of the facilities in the Maldives. A descriptive phenomenological approach of inquiry was employed to explore the new phenomenon of the nursing experience during the early COVID-19 pandemic. Using purposive convenience sampling, six nurses were interviewed in depth via semi-structured face‒to-face interviews. The interviews were analysed through modified principles of Colaizzi’s method. The final themes generated were preparation for the new challenge; combating infection control; meeting daily patient needs; challenges in caring and rising above; and the psychological impact of working in a pandemic.” The study findings suggest the need to have continuous skill and knowledge development of nurses with evolving healthcare issues. Also to support nurses with psychological issues, along with creating an empowering environment for nurses. Furthermore, to ensure efficient infection control practices. The study concluded that nurses and nurse leaders play a role in ensuring that policies during healthcare crises that are practically feasible and effective during a pandemic.
