Abstract

Background and Aim: A cataract is a condition in which the typically clear lens of the eye or its capsule, which is a transparent membrane surrounding the lens, becomes clouded or opacified, making it difficult for light to pass through the lens and reach the retina. This study aims to assess the quality of life among patients diagnosed with cataract and to determine the association between Quality of Life(QOL) and baseline variables.

Materials and Methods: A descriptive study was conducted in a selected hospital in Mangaluru. The sample consisting of 152 subjects was selected by purposive sampling technique. The tool used was demographic proforma and the Indian Vision Function Assessment Questionnaire (33-item). The results were analyzed by using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences software (SPSS) –version 23.

Results: Study findings shows that 79.8 % had poor Quality of Life(QOL) in general function domain,43.6% had good Quality of Life in psychosocial function domain and in 56.75% had moderate Quality of Life in the visual function domain. There was no association found between Quality of Life (QOL) and demographic variables.

Conclusion: As cataract effects the day-to-day life of a person, it’s always better to undergo treatment at the earliest to prevent vision loss. Doing so will enhance the joy of living.
