Abstract

Introduction- During pregnancy and labor, women undergo changes in their bodies, and are at risk for various complications during this period of life. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)during pregnancy is a debilitating, life-threatening condition that impacts the health of women.

Purpose- This study aimed to identify the incidence ,factors predisposing women to DIC and the treatment modalities used for women during pregnancy and postpartum to manage DIC

Materials and Methods- A retrospective cohort study was conducted to identify incidence, symptoms, laboratory findings, treatment, and maternal outcomes for the last five years. Records of the patients diagnosed with DIC during pregnancy and postpartum were reviewed to identify the factors and outcomes as well as the treatment modalities adopted.

Results- A total of 102 files were screened, of which most of the cases were referral cases, accounting for 69.6%, and 68.6% had postpartum hemorrhage as a preceding complication. DIC is diagnosed on the basis of the blood indicators present in the patient; among the blood indicators noted, 46.1% are anaemic, and 24.1% have decreased levels of platelets, which is an identification marker for DIC. A total of 88.2% of women had decreased fibrinogen levels. The treatment modalities included treating the underlying cause and anticoagulant treatments such as heparin and aspirin.

Conclusion- Identifying the factors and treatment modalities of this condition will enable us to take preventive steps during the antenatal period and adopt appropriate screening strategies for high-risk pregnant women.
