Abstract

Introduction: Waste management is an increasing problem that occurs globally due to expanding population around the globe. Researchers worldwide are working towards ending this problem that impacts the environment and people's health. The knowledge of the wastes produced and how we manage them is vital for the population to understand; knowing about it and practicing the same will create a ripple effect on the waste generated by the people.

Objective: To determine the condition of the urban villages in terms of awareness and practice of waste management, and to know whether these are interrelated.

Methods: A quantitative approach with a descriptive survey design was employed for the study. Subjects were selected using simple random sampling from the adopted villages of Manipal College of Nursing for the study. The researcher administered tools to assess knowledge and practices in waste management and recycling, identifying their current understanding and practices.

Results: Out of 422 samples, the majority of participants, 357 (84.6%), demonstrated good knowledge, while 46 (10.9%) had average knowledge and 19 (4.5%) exhibited poor knowledge. In terms of practices, 312 (73.93%) participants showed good waste management and recycling practices, whereas 112 (26.07%) demonstrated poor practices.

Conclusion: Rural residents have good waste management awareness and practices. Not every resident, nevertheless, adhered to the necessary waste management procedures. Additionally, rubbish was observed strewn throughout the area. This suggests that in order to preserve a sustainable ecosystem, the government should promote awareness of waste management best practices and the value of recycling.
