Abstract

Post-partum haemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal mortality globally. This report elaborates the diagnosis and treatment of a 31-year-old woman with PPH, treated in our tertiary centre. On presentation, she showed all signs of hypovolemic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Persistent fresh vaginal bleeding led to the decision to perform an emergency hysterectomy. She required massive transfusion but consequently developed transfusion-associated lung injury (TRALI), for which she was effectively treated. She made a full recovery leading to discharge 12 days after admission. This article stresses the importance of the multi-disciplinary approach and rapid, coordinated management of emergency obstetric complications.
