Abstract
Peripheral neuropathy is a common and debilitating condition, impacting between 2-7% of the population, with prevalence increasing significantly after the age fifty. While the cause of peripheral neuropathy remains unknown in 25% to 46% of cases (idiopathic), this occurrence is more frequent in older individuals. Peripheral neuropathy encompasses a range of conditions resulting from damage to any part of the peripheral nervous system. Histopathological analysis of nerve biopsies is diagnostically important for certain peripheral neuropathy patients. Suspected peripheral neuropathy requires a comprehensive patient history and physical examination to establish a differential diagnosis.
