Abstract
Clear aligner therapy (CAT) has emerged as a popular alternative to traditional braces, offering a more discreet and comfortable option for orthodontic treatment, particularly in growing patients. This technique uses a set of clear, specially designed plastic trays that gradually force teeth into place. Although transparent aligners are frequently used by adults, their use in children has increased significantly, especially for those with mixed dentition (ages 6–12). Since it enables orthodontists to treat occlusal and functional problems before they worsen, this stage of dental development is essential for early intervention. The benefits of clear aligners include enhanced face and dental aesthetics, which enhances the patient's psychological health and quality of life.
When it comes to mild to moderate dental problems like crowding, spacing, and bite irregularities such deep overbites and crossbites, clear aligners work well. By treating issues early and averting more serious consequences later, they are especially helpful in controlling the mixed dentition stage. Furthermore, because aligners are removable, patients can eat and drink freely and maintain better oral hygiene, which lowers the risk of plaque accumulation and periodontal problems. However, because transparent aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours per day, patient compliance is crucial to their efficacy. Additional procedures or fixed appliances may be necessary in complex instances with severe malocclusions, substantial rotations, or missing teeth. Fixed appliances might be necessary in complex instances with severe malocclusions, severe rotations, or missing teeth. For more intricate movements, clear aligners can also be paired with auxiliary components like power chains, elastics, or attachments. Despite certain drawbacks, such as possible speech or misalignment problems, clear aligners are a very attractive, practical, and minimally intrusive orthodontic treatment option for children. The scope of this review article is to throw light on some basics and treatment options in mixed dentition.
