Abstract
Introduction - Choanal polyps are benign, solitary, hyperplastic lesions arising from the nasal or paranasal mucosa, most commonly from the maxillary sinus. They account for 3–6% of nasal polyps in adults and up to 33% in children, with sphenochoanal variants being rare. We report a case of a sphenochoanal polyp and review related literature to highlight this uncommon presentation.
Case report – A 17-year-old female presented with bilateral nasal obstruction, rhinorrhoea, and headache unresponsive to medication. DNE showed a glistening mass at the choana, and CT confirmed a sphenochoanal polyp arising from the sphenoid sinus. She underwent successful FESS with complete excision; follow-up showed no recurrence at six months.
Conclusion - Sphenochoanal polyps are often missed early due to vague symptoms and deep location. Their proximity to vital structures makes surgery challenging. Early diagnosis and complete excision are key to preventing recurrence.
