Abstract

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder and anti-epileptic drugs presently in use are incapable of effectively managing seizures and have various side effects of medications. Thus, there is a need for a new antiepileptic drug with higher efficacy and fewer side effects. In this study Extracts of fruit peel of Citrus medica were subjected to antiepileptic activity against maximal electroshock (MES) and Pentylene tetrazole (PTZ)-induced convulsions animal models and lithium/pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus. Extracts of Citrus medica (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) has significantly reduced the time-period of extensor phase in MES model and extended the onset of clonic convulsions in PTZ model, respectively. In lithium-pilocarpine model, Citrus medica extract exhibited significant decreases in the severity of status epilepsy in proportion to the dose of the extract, when correlated with the control group. Citrus medica extract at 400 mg/kg exhibited significant antiepileptic activity which is comparable with that of standard drug.
