Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric exhibits good tensile strength and toughness, making it a suitable candidate as a reinforcement for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. This paper presents the preparation and characterization of a novel PET fabric/SiC/epoxy hybrid composite. The incorporation of SiC enhances the flame retardancy of the hybrid composites by reducing the burning rate, suppressing dripping combustion, and making the composites self-extinguishing at SiC loadings of 4 wt.% or above. These properties benefit fire-safe applications, improving the material's ability to resist ignition and slow down flame propagation. Moreover, the presence of SiC particles improves the tensile and flexural strength of the composites, but the elongation at break is reduced. The fractography analysis reveals the improved interaction between the PET fabric and the epoxy matrix by SiC particles. SiC particles with random shapes and sharp corners can form a mechanical interlock between the matrix and the PET fabric, enhancing the properties of the hybrid composites. Highlights: A novel hybrid composite of PET fabric/SiC particles reinforced in the epoxy matrix. A new thermally stable and flame-retardant composite. Composite that is economical and light in weight, with improved strength and hardness. Suitable candidate for automotive and industrial applications.
