Abstract
New organic Hydrogen Bonded Liquid Crystal (HBLCs) mixtures are developed using a combination of nematic and smectic liquid crystals to obtain P855N and P1855N. This new development formed large, oriented mono domains of liquid crystals encompassing well-aligned nematic and smectic A mesophases. POM results exhibited supercooled phases in shorter chain length molecules, indicating a more extended LC range than their longer-chain counterparts. The Vth increases with decreasing temperature, with an average switching of 3.2 V for P855N and 3.9 V for P1855N. The elastic constants K11 and K33 associated with molecular deformation are inversely proportional to temperature. Longer chain lengths exhibit less activation energy Ea, due to their flexibility. Insights on the hydrogen bond lengths and the additional hydrogen bonds in the molecules obtained through DFT studies help understand the molecular structure, which relates to the observed dielectric behavior of the mixtures.
