Abstract
Reddit hosts complex social interactions on various topics, including online dating. This study uses conventional content analysis to examine user-generated content within popular Indian online dating subreddits: r/indiangirlsontinder and r/indianboysontinder. By analyzing textual data from these forums, we uncover the gender dynamics and cultural nuances shaping online dating practices in India. Findings indicate that these subreddits serve as platforms for men and women to discuss online dating, share experiences, and seek advice. The analysis reveals distinct gender dynamics, with discussions on dating preferences, cultural expectations, and societal stereotypes. A broader narrative of discontent and perceived unfairness among male users is evident, often compounded by perceived power dynamics where women are seen as gatekeepers to intimacy. Female users, conversely, prioritize safety and authenticity, expressing concerns about unsolicited advances and online harassment. Overall, these subreddits provide a space for individuals to release frustrations, seek validation, and navigate the complexities of dating and intimacy within the Indian context. Utilizing the Crystallization framework, the study demonstrates how interactions on Reddit lead to dominant paradigms, similar to traditional media’s agenda-setting function.
