Abstract

Background: The purpose of the study was to conduct a comprehensive exploration of coeliac trunk (CoT) in a homogenous population group for morphometry and its positional relationship to the other ventral branches of the abdominal aorta and to the aortic bifurcation using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) imaging technique. This study also aimed to stratify and compare the data based on gender and to compare data obtained from the radiological study with data from the cadaveric study done on a similar population group. Method: CoT in 20 formalin fixed cadavers and in 50 MDCT angiography image from subjects that included both genders were assessed in this cross sectional study. Measurements of stem length, diameter, distance of origin from the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) and aortic bifurcation (AB) were taken. Proportional distances were calculated for inter-arterial distances. Variations were excluded from the study. Result: Stem length and diameter values were consistent with literature. Absolute value of distance of CoT from AB and from the other ventral branches significantly differed between gender. Cadaveric study had less proportional CoT-IMA distances but high absolute values of IMA-AB distances compared to MDCT study. Conclusion: Absolute values and not proportional values of distance of CoT from the other ventral branches is determined by gender. Differences in inter-arterial distance between cadaveric and radiological specimens highlight the relevance of substantiating cadaveric data with in-vivo studies. Increase in the distance of origin of CoT from AB is likely to increase CoT-IMA distance without affecting the CoT-SMA positional relationship.
