Abstract

Study Background: The research presented titled “Defining e-research in Social Work: A Review of Strategies and Challenges” by Asha Albuquerque-Pai, Melanie Pius Dsouza, Teddy Andrews Jaihind Jothikaran, K. V. Sebastin and Lena Ashok focuses on providing a clear and comprehensive definition, framework and guidelines for the conduct of e-research in social work. This review article aims to present the methods that can be adapted to merge technology with research in the social work domain while concurrently highlighting the associated challenges.

Research Goals:

● To understand how social work research can be undertaken using the internet to access participants/respondents, data collection, and analysis.

● To explore the strategies and challenges which exist in e-research.

● To define e-research in social work based on the findings.

Methodological Approach: The study adopted a narrative approach to literature reviews. The characteristics of relevant studies were charted, coded, and themes generated.

Results and Findings:

  1. Presentation of existing studies by country and research design.
  2. The concept of e-research from the lens of social work.
  3. Positionality of the researcher in e-research.
  4. Strategies to incorporate technology into social work research and challenges thereof.
  5. A proposed framework for e-research in social work: A guide to technology as a phenomenon, medium and setting.
  6. A synthesized definition of e-research in social work.
