Summary of the paper: Living Apart Together (LAT): A new family form in urban India

Abstract
Study Background: In this paper, the main aim is to examine a new form of living arrangement living apart together, which is gradually rising in the educated and elite class in urban India. In this living arrangement married individuals prioritize their career choices and choose to reside near their organizations and not cohabit with their married partners. Research Questions: This study intended to understand why and how this living arrangement works out and how marriage dynamics are shaped in this type of living arrangement. Additionally, this paper also investigated the role of the family and the amount of support these married couples receive for this type of living arrangement. Methodology: For the purpose of this study qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews were used to interview the individuals who are in this form of living arrangement. Findings: The main findings of this paper were that individual choice is gradually rising in the marriage system and both individuals are prioritizing their career requirements. Additionally, technology plays a key role in maintaining this form of living arrangement. However, there is limited support available for this living arrangement from the parents of the couples. Conclusion: This living arrangement could be the future in India and could be a new family structure in Indian society.
