Abstract

Study Background: The study was focused on the dependence of structural and optical features of the spin-coated ZnO thin films under vacuum annealing conditions. The various optical constants of the films were determined by Wemple Di Domenico and Sellmeir’s model. The study also discusses about the selection of material for optical applications based on these model parameters.

Research Goals and Hypotheses: The primary goal was to evaluate the effect of vacuum annealing on optical parameters such as band gap, Urbach energy, and carrier concentration of the deposited ZnO thin films. The hypothesis was that post-annealing plays a crucial role in modifying the crystallinity and surface features of prepared films which indirectly affect optical parameters. The study was carried out in vacuum conditions to improve the optical properties of ZnO material.

Methodological Approach: The thin films of ZnO (different molarity) were deposited on the glass substrate by the sol-gel spin coating technique. The deposited films were vacuum annealed at various temperatures and the structural, morphological, and optical characterizations were carried out. The data were analyzed to understand the effect of vacuum annealing on optical parameters.

Results and Discoveries: The findings revealed all the films were polycrystalline and crystallite size increased with the rise in annealing temperature. Wemple Di Domenico and Sellmeir’s model employed to calculate optical constants revealed that vacuum annealing creates more defect sites in the material. Thus, suggesting that these vacuum-annealed ZnO materials can be used in industrial applications for various optical coating or optoelectronic devices.
