Abstract

The study investigates the ameliorative potential of aqueous extract of Carica papaya Linn. leaves on acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis in male albino Wistar rats. Ulcerative colitis was induced in the rats through intrarectal administration of acetic acid. The experimental groups received varying doses of the aqueous extract of Carica papaya leaves, while a control group was treated with a standard anti-inflammatory drug sulfasalazine. Biochemical, histopathological, and microbial analyses were conducted to assess the extract's effects on inflammation, oxidative stress, and gut microbiota. The aqueous extract of Carica papaya 500mg/kg significantly reduced weight loss and improved histopathological scores and antioxidant markers compared to the untreated group. Additionally, the extract demonstrated antibacterial properties with potential prebiotic activity. Carica papaya leaf extract exhibited a protective effect, possibly due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, highlighting its potential as a natural therapeutic agent for ulcerative colitis.
