Abstract
Background and Research Goals: Municipal bodies in developing countries are largely occupied with managing solid waste. These municipal bodies are unable to deal effectively with waste and recover maximum energy from it. In India, the private sector's participation in solid waste management (SWM) has not been widespread. This study tries to explore the perceived reasons for this lack of participation.
Methodological Approach: this study is positioned as an exploratory study, and the case study
method is appropriate. The case study method is commonly utilised to understand the situation and help create meaning from the context. This study attempts to draw meaning from the available data, i.e., policies and views of participants.
Four firms are purposively selected from sources, including newspaper articles, websites, and blogs. Six semi-structured in-depth interviews are conducted with key personnel of four firms in two cities, Ahmedabad and Bangalore. Open-ended questions are used to generate data for analysis. After segregating the themes emerging from the data, linkages are made with underlying theoretical concepts and schools of thought.
Results and Discoveries: Three major reasons for reduced private participation in waste management activities as perceived by these respondents are: 1) lack of awareness of the value of waste; 2) absence of segregating behaviour; 3) low prioritisation by governing bodies.
