Abstract
Study Background: This research titled “Sustainability in hospitality education: research trends and future directions” authored by Senthilkumaran Piramanayagam, Jyothi Mallya and Valsaraj Payini, maps the existing literature on sustainable development (SD) related research in hospitality higher education. The study calls for a deeper exploration of the efforts and outcomes of HEIs in integrating sustainable development into their curricula and practices through a systematic literature review.
Research Goals and Hypotheses: This study aims to address the following research questions:
RQ1. What is the performance of research constituents (articles, journals and authors) in Sustainability in Hospitality Education (SHE)?
RQ2. What are the frequently studied topics in the SHE literature?
RQ3. What thematic structure is apparent in the domain of SHE literature?
Methodological Approach: Researchers in this study adopted a systematic literature review and bibliometric approach. A systematic literature review is a structured and methodical approach to reviewing and synthesizing existing research on a particular topic. This approach is particularly valuable for identifying gaps in the literature, guiding future research, and informing evidence-based practice and policy-making.
Results and Discoveries: 67% of studies in SHE was published in the two years (2021 and 2022), indicating a recent surge in interest and scholarly attention. One of the most researched topics is the integration of sustainability into the hospitality curriculum, which is still emerging. SHE research spans various disciplines, including education, development, management, policy, law, environment, behavioral science, planning, and psychology. There is a noted geographical imbalance, with most studies authored in developed countries, highlighting the need for more research in diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts.
