Abstract
Study Background: The summary titled “Importance–Performance Analysis of Destination Attributes of an Emerging Astrotourism Destination in Kerala, India” authored by Sindhu Joseph, Jijo P. Ulahannan, and Senthilkumaran Piramanayagam discusses the historical and modern relationship between humans and natural phenomena, particularly focusing on astrotourism, which combines astronomy and tourism. Astrotourism involves visiting astronomical observatories, experiencing celestial events, and enjoying optical phenomena like northern lights, rainbows, and meteor showers. It attracts a wide range of individuals, from amateur enthusiasts to professional astronomers. Astrotourism is gaining importance as a niche tourism sector, providing both educational and recreational value.
Research Goals and Hypotheses: The study aims to use importance–performance analysis (IPA) to assess and prioritize destination-related attributes in astrotourism. This is particularly relevant in the post-COVID-19 scenario, where domestic and rural tourism are on the rise. The shift towards niche tourism is seen as less exploitative and more sustainable, fostering community interaction and economic development.
Methodological Approach: The study investigated tourist perceptions and satisfaction during the solar eclipse on December 26, 2019, at various locations at Kerala, India. It used a quantitative approach with self-completion surveys from 145 tourists. The study utilized Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) to assess the tourists’ perceived importance and the actual performance of destination attributes. The IPA grid helped to identify strengths and weaknesses of the destinations, highlighting areas for improvement and strategic planning.
Results and Discoveries: The results indicated that factors like infrastructure, accessibility, cultural aspects, and tourist amenities significantly impact tourist satisfaction and experience. The study underscores the importance of professional management and strategic planning to enhance the astrotourism experience. The study concluded that effective organization, professional management, and scientific explanations significantly enhance the astrotourism experience.
